About product

The U-STAR modeling drill bit, 3.0 mm in diameter

A drill bit 3 mm in diameter from the workshop range of the U-STAR brand. Three millimeters is already a noticeable hole, which in modeling practice suits the mouths of exhausts and of barrels of a larger caliber, the passage of wiring between parts, the seating of a magnet, the axle of a wheel or drilling a hole into which a metal pin carrying a heavier part of an assembly is inserted. It drills plastic, resin, wood and thin brass sheet.

How to work with the drill bit

  • Clamp it into a hand-held pin vise or into the chuck of a micro drill.
  • At this diameter pilot-drilling with a thinner bit is practically compulsory, otherwise the bit will wander as it enters.
  • Mark the center of the hole with the point of a knife or a center punch.
  • Drill slowly and without pressure. High speeds heat the plastic and the material starts wrapping around the cutting edge.
  • With thin walls, support the part from below, so that the edge of the hole does not break out.
  • Level the burr that forms with the edge of a knife or with fine sanding paper.

Who the drill bit is for

For modelers who make holes of a larger diameter: builders of equipment, aircraft and cars, modelers working with resin accessories and anyone who strengthens assemblies with metal pins. It also serves well when preparing mountings for magnets, with which removable covers and panels can be arranged. Like every cutting tool this bit wears too, so a spare in the drawer will save an interrupted job.

The drill bit has a sharp point and cutting edges. Protect your eyes while working, clamp small parts instead of holding them in your fingers, and store the tool out of reach of children.

FAQ

It is recommended. A bit 3 mm in diameter tends to wander as it enters; a pilot hole holds it in place and the result is more accurate.

You lower the risk by supporting the part from below with an offcut of plastic or wood and by drilling slowly and without pressure.

With modeling plastic high speeds are rather a drawback. A hand-held pin vise or a micro drill with speed control is ideal.

The number of pieces is given on the packaging.
