Replacement wheels for the Soviet GAZ-AAA truck in 1:48 scale, with the tires sagging under the weight of the vehicle.
Responsibility details are not available.
This truck from the Gorky car plant came about by adding a second driven axle to a simple machine derived from a licensed Ford. It was built from the middle of the 1930s and the Red Army used it practically everywhere, from carrying ammunition through towing light guns to serving as the chassis of armored cars and rocket launchers. It was a simple, light vehicle and, above all, one that could be produced in enormous numbers.
Wheels supplied in kits tend to be perfectly round, yet a real vehicle stands on rubber that spreads out under load. The set offers that look straight from the mold: the tire is flat where it meets the road and the sidewalls bulge slightly. The model immediately gains weight and stops looking as if it were hovering above the ground.
When fitting them, make sure the flat spot points exactly downward and lies parallel with the ground. The surest way is to glue the wheels on only once the vehicle is seated on the diorama base. The tread pattern comes out well if you go over it after painting with a thinned brown wash and wipe the excess off the high points with a cloth.
The vehicle itself offers plenty of subjects. It stood loaded with ammunition, towed a light gun, carried a rocket launcher and an armored body. Loaded rubber makes a different kind of sense in each of those guises: a loaded vehicle sits lower and its footprint on the road is wider, while an empty one looks lighter. Choose how deep the wheel sinks into the mud on the base accordingly.
