A set of ten periscopes for the American medium tank, 1:48 scale. Five pieces raised, five pulled down inside.
Responsibility details are not available.
The crew of an American medium tank of the Second World War saw out mostly through prismatic instruments recessed into the roof. The driver and his assistant each had one above the hatch, the gunner and the loader had more in the turret, and the commander rotated his all the way round. It was a clever solution: the optics lay deep inside, a hit would break them, but the crew replaced them from within in a moment and did not have to open a hatch to do it.
According to the breakdown the package holds five assemblies raised and five pulled down. The difference between them is not decorative. A raised head belongs to a vehicle on the move with the hatches closed, a lowered one to a machine that is standing still, has its hatches open and a crew looking out directly. Mixing the two without thought on one model is the first thing a knowledgeable viewer will notice.
Clean the openings first. The imitations molded into the roof have to be drilled out and the surface leveled off, otherwise the new assembly will seat crooked.
Leave the optics for last. Paint the body in the vehicle color but leave the front face bare and polished. A drop of gloss varnish once the rest of the machine is finished creates the impression of glass.
Dust does not belong here. Mask the face during the final soiling of the whole model. A fogged instrument looks like a casting flaw, not like a trace of service.
In one forty-eighth the head measures roughly two millimeters, so fine-tipped tweezers and glue carried on the tip of a wire are worth having.
