Ten finished model beeches from the German maker HEKI, eleven to thirteen centimeters tall. It is exactly this combination, a larger number of pieces and a modest spread of heights, that is most useful for building a forest: trees bought one at a time tend to produce growth that is too regular, whereas ten pieces of uneven height let you build a group that looks as though it grew by itself.
The trees are pushed into pre-drilled holes or glued by the foot of the trunk. Lay the whole group out dry first and look at it from the place you view the layout from. In a forest set them close together, as touching crowns are normal in a beech wood, and leave the ground beneath them almost bare, with nothing but leaf granulate. At the edge of the stand, by contrast, add bushes and taller grass.
For layout and diorama builders putting together a continuous broadleaf forest, and for modelers who need a larger number of trees at once. Ten pieces in one box also mean that the forest can be built in one go without having to be added to tree by tree. This is modeling material, not a toy. The manufacturer marks its scenery products as unsuitable for children under fifteen.
