A finished model tree from the German maker HEKI, thirty-five centimeters tall. The sycamore maple is a mature broadleaf tree with a broad, densely branched crown, and on a model it is a piece used as the single landmark of a whole scene. In H0 it matches an exceptionally old tree, while in larger scales it stands for an ordinary mature tree, so modelers reach for the same piece from both directions.
Stability is what matters. Make the hole in the base considerably deeper than for ordinary small trees, fix the trunk in it with glue and let the tree dry propped up in an upright position. Spread the flattened branches carefully with your fingers after unpacking and leave the outline of the crown irregular, as a symmetrical shape gives the model away. At the foot of the trunk add grass and root flares from filler, because on a tree this large the transition into the ground is conspicuous.
For builders of large layouts and dioramas and for modelers working in larger scales. This is modeling material, not a toy. The manufacturer marks its scenery products as unsuitable for children under fifteen.
