Two boards with the subject of a wall of undressed quarry stone, each measuring 28 x 14 cm, for N and Z scales, that is 1:160 and 1:220. In the relief the stone is laid irregularly, without straight courses and without equal dimensions, so the wall looks rustic and older than regular block masonry.
Irregular masonry belongs on the boundaries of plots, around an orchard and a pasture, on the base course of a farm building, on a terrace on the slope of a vineyard and on the bank of a brook. In N scale a wall two meters high measures a mere twelve millimeters, so one board will give a very long stretch, easily across a whole module. It is precisely low walls of this kind that can give a scene its scale, because the viewer judges the size of everything else from their height.
Lay the board on the place, draw round the length and the height you need and trim it with a sharp knife against a ruler. Do not make the crown of the wall perfectly straight along the whole length; a slight rise and fall looks more faithful. Start from a thin glaze in color, darken the joints with a wash and apply two or three shades to the individual stones, so that they differ from one another. In small scales the rule is that the contrast should be milder than on a large model, otherwise the wall will break up into a motley blotch from a distance. At the foot add grass and self-sown growth.
The package holds two boards of the stated size. A base, the terrain materials, the buildings, the paints and the glue are not part of it, unless stated otherwise.
