About product

The Focke-Wulf Ta 154 Moskito in 1:32 scale - a multimedia kit from HPH Models

The Ta 154 Moskito from the Czech manufacturer HPH Models is a resin multimedia kit in 1:32 scale - it is not injection-molded plastic. The basis is formed by resin castings, complemented by clear resin glazing, photo-etched parts, turned metal parts (the gun barrels and the radar antenna array), a metal nose weight, fabric harness straps and masks for the glazing. Let us be honest: this is a demanding kit for very experienced modelers and collectors. It is not for a beginner - resin is not bonded with polystyrene cement and the parts have to be cut from the casting blocks and cleaned up.

The real subject

The Ta 154 was a German night fighter meant to be the answer to the British de Havilland Mosquito. And just like it, it was largely built of wood and plywood - the aim was to save strategic metals. That, however, is what killed it. The wooden structure was bonded with a special phenolic adhesive (Tego-Film); Allied bombing destroyed the only factory that produced this adhesive. The substitute adhesive was too acidic, it ate into the wood and weakened it - in the summer of 1944 several aircraft broke up in the air at speed because a wing bond failed. Production stopped and the program was canceled shortly afterward; only a few production aircraft were completed. The Ta 154 thus remains one of the most tragic what-if stories in aviation history.

Building and painting tips

Resin is built differently from plastic: first wash the parts in warm soapy water to remove the mold release residue - otherwise the paint will not hold. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw. They are bonded with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue), and with epoxy on loaded joints; polystyrene cement does not work. Resin dust is harmful to health - sand wet and with protection for your airways and eyes. Test the large joints dry and pin them with wire. Paint over a primer that holds on resin.

Who the model is for

  • For very experienced modelers - resin, photo-etched parts, metal, a different build technology
  • For collectors of large models in 1:32 and of rare Luftwaffe types
  • For anyone interested in wooden night fighters and in the story of the German answer to the Mosquito
  • For those who want a display piece and do not mind a longer build
  • Not suitable for beginners or for a one-evening build

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted as a kit of resin and supplementary materials. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. It is a resin multimedia kit - resin, clear resin parts, photo-etched and turned metal parts. It is built differently from plastic and is not intended for beginners.

With cyanoacrylate glue (super glue), and with epoxy on loaded joints. Ordinary polystyrene cement does not work on resin. The parts also have to be washed free of mold release agent before painting and the casting blocks cut off.

The aircraft was largely wooden and was bonded with a special adhesive. The Allies bombed out the only factory producing it; the substitute adhesive was too acidic, it weakened the structure and several aircraft broke up in flight. The program ended.

It is if the rules are followed, but resin dust is harmful to health - sand wet and use respiratory and eye protection.
