This injection-molded plastic kit from Trumpeter captures the German Junkers Ju 87 dive bomber in its D version, that is in the form built from 1941 onward, which formed the backbone of the type's service in the second half of the war. The large 1:32 scale suits modelers who want to work up the glazed cockpit, the engine section and the sturdy fixed landing gear.
The Ju 87 became known as the Stuka, which is the abbreviation of the German term for a dive bombing aircraft. Compared with the earlier machines, the D version received a more powerful Junkers Jumo 211 V12 engine with a more capable cooling system, a reworked nose aerodynamically, a newly shaped cockpit with a better view and heavier armor. It was in this form that the Stuka flew above all on the Eastern Front, in the Mediterranean and over North Africa, where it carried its bomb load against ground and shipping targets. The accuracy of an attack from a dive was paid for with low speed and vulnerability wherever the enemy controlled the air.
The extensively glazed cockpit of this type can be seen through from end to end, so finish and paint the interior before you close the fuselage. The glazing frames are best handled by masking with narrow tape or with masks. German camouflage is sprayed over the base color, and a soft transition between shades over the wing surfaces is created with an airbrush from a short distance at low pressure. Complete the weathering by accentuating the engraved lines and with light wear on the leading edges.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
