About product

Great Wall Hobby 1:32 P-40B

An injection-molded plastic kit of the Curtiss P-40B fighter in 1:32 scale from Great Wall Hobby. The 1:32 scale means a span of around thirty-five centimeters and matching room for detail in the cockpit, the engine section and the landing gear bays. It is one of the maker's more elaborate kits. The model is meant for building, not for collectors of finished pieces.

The real subject

The Curtiss P-40B was a single-engine, single-seat fighter of all-metal construction with a liquid-cooled Allison V12 engine. The recognition feature of the type is the low-set nose radiator, which gave the aircraft its characteristic silhouette. The P-40B version was one of the early production variants of the turn of the 1930s and 1940s; in British Commonwealth service the matching fit was designated the Tomahawk. The type entered service in the early part of the Second World War and was used on several fronts, where its sturdy structure and good diving qualities made up for limited performance at high altitude.

Building and painting tips

A large scale forgives fewer mistakes than a small one. It pays to finish and paint the cockpit before closing the fuselage and to try every larger assembly dry. Glue with thin plastic cement run into the seams by capillary action, as excess is hard to hide in a large scale. Fill and carefully sand the joints on the fuselage and the leading edges; on a model of this size every step shows. Lay down a primer before painting, which at the same time reveals unfinished joints. An airbrush is practically a necessity in this scale — large areas cannot be covered evenly with a brush. Spray gloss clear compatible with the paint used under the decals, work in a softener once dry and finally unify the surface with a matte or satin clear coat.

Who the model is for

  • Experienced modelers who want a large, detailed fighter model.
  • Builders with the set-up for an airbrush and the room in a display case.
  • Anyone interested in early American fighters.
  • Modelers who enjoy taking the cockpit and the engine section further.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. It is a classic injection-molded kit that has to be assembled and painted. Glue and paints are not included in the package.

Check the exact part count and the make-up of the decals on the packaging.

Not really. A large scale brings out every inaccuracy in a joint and on the surface, and an airbrush suits the even spraying of large areas.

Tomahawk was the designation used in British Commonwealth service for the matching early variants of the same type. It is the same design line, not a different aircraft.
