Propellers in two pieces, a Pratt & Whitney R-2800 radial engine and the front cowling for the P-47D Thunderbolt in versions 25 to 30. A resin set in 1:32 scale for the Hasegawa kit.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Thunderbolt was the heaviest single-engined fighter of its day and everything about it followed from the powerplant. The Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp eighteen-cylinder radial gave around 2000 horsepower, held its power at high altitude thanks to a turbocharger in the rear fuselage, and its toughness brought a good number of aircraft home with a cylinder shot away. The D-25 to D-30 versions brought the bubble canopy, better rearward vision and propeller blades broader than those the earlier machines carried.
The set replaces the whole front end. It contains two propellers, a casting of the engine with both rows of cylinders and the front cowling with its cooling gills, meaning the areas that catch the first glance of anyone who leans over the model.
During the build it pays to seat the engine in the cowling first, check the axis of the propeller shaft and only then join the whole front end to the fuselage. For painting, a dark metallic base works, with a dry brush in a lighter shade over it and finally a thin oil glaze around the exhaust outlets. The airframe of the aircraft has to be obtained separately. On the finished model the front end tends to be the first thing a visitor notices, so the time spent on the cylinders and the cowling lip comes back in every close-up photograph.
