An accurate 3D-printed exhaust for a model of the Bell AH-1G Cobra attack helicopter in 1:35 scale from ResKit. The part replaces the exhaust from the base ICM kit. It is NOT a kit of the helicopter: it is a standalone upgrade accessory and you have to own the model it goes on. 3D printing manages thin walls and a cleanly open exhaust mouth, which injection-molded plastic cannot do for reasons of technology. Watch out for a mix-up: a CMK exterior upgrade set exists for the same helicopter and deals with entirely different parts of the machine (the underwing rocket pods, the pitot tube, the tail skid). The two accessories complement each other but do not replace each other: the CMK set holds no exhaust.
The AH-1G was the world's first purpose-built attack helicopter. It came out of an urgent need in Vietnam: slow transport helicopters needed an armed escort, so Bell took the engine and rotor from the UH-1 Huey and built a completely new, extremely narrow fuselage around them. The crew therefore sits in tandem, not side by side, as a narrow fuselage is a smaller target from the front. The G version is the original Vietnam-era machine, the HueyCobra. The exhaust sits on top of the fuselage behind the rotor housing, so it is very much on show on a finished model.
Cut the part away from the print supports with a saw or a cutting disc; never snap it off, as the material is brittle and cracks. Cement for polystyrene has no effect on it: glue it with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue), or on a larger face rather with a two-part epoxy. Before painting, wash the part in lukewarm soapy water, as print resin residue and uncured resin will otherwise repel the paint. Sanding dust is harmful to health, so sand wet and do not breathe it in. A dark metallic base suits an exhaust, followed by smoky and rusty touches of pigment or enamel washes, growing stronger toward the mouth.
It is NOT a kit. It is an upgrade accessory: the base model, glue and paints are not included in the package.
