Explosive reactive armor consists of an array of flat blocks distributed in regular rows over the front of the hull, the turret and the sides of a vehicle. On being hit by a shaped-charge projectile the block reacts and disrupts its jet before it reaches the base armor. Soviet vehicles that received this protection changed their silhouette markedly as a result: the smooth areas disappeared under a dense grid of blocks and the whole machine looks more robust. For a modeler it is one of the most conspicuous differences between the early and the modernized version of the same type.
Blocks of reactive armor in 1:35 scale intended to supplement a kit. How many parts the package carries and which vehicle the set is built for are given in the manufacturer's instructions. The parts are not polystyrene, so they are worked differently from the rest of the kit and solvent cement has no effect on them.
Cut the excess material away with a sharp blade a little way from the part and sand the remainder carefully, so that the sharp edges of the blocks are preserved. Wash and degrease the parts before painting, otherwise the paint holds unreliably. They are glued with cyanoacrylate; on larger areas two-part glue is more certain. Try the distribution dry first and help yourself with a guide line, because irregularly glued rows of blocks spoil the impression more than anything else. While painting, set the shade of the blocks apart subtly from the rest of the vehicle and add rubbed spots on the edges, where the crew brushes against the armor.
The set is intended for modelers who want to build a vehicle in its modernized form and will not be satisfied with the shape out of the box. It calls for careful measuring out, but the result transforms the whole look of the model. The kit, paints and glue are not included, unless stated otherwise.
