About product

Bergepanzer BPz3 Buffalo ARV in 1:35 scale from Hobby Boss

An injection-molded plastic kit of the modern German recovery vehicle Bergepanzer 3, which carries the nickname Büffel, in English transcription Buffalo. The abbreviation ARV stands for armored recovery vehicle, that is a machine intended for pulling out, towing away and repairing damaged vehicles in the field. The model comes in the usual modeling scale of 1:35, so it can be built into a scene with other contemporary vehicles and with figures.

The real subject

The BPz3 is based on the chassis of the main battle tank Leopard 2, with which it shares its running gear and its powerplant. In place of a turret it carries working equipment: a slewing crane placed on the right side of the hull, a main recovery winch and a front dozer blade, which serves as a brace when pulling and as a clearing tool. The vehicle was introduced with the Bundeswehr and in other armies operating the Leopard 2, and it thus completes tank units as their technical support.

Building and painting tips

Finish and paint the running gear and all the details inside the hull before you close the upper hull part, because you will not get at them later. Join the plastic with thin cement for polystyrene, which draws itself into the seam by capillary action. Apply a filler primer before painting, so that the shade holds even on the edges. A modern German vehicle comes out well with three-tone camouflage sprayed with an airbrush, a dark wash in the recesses and pigments for dust in the running gear, where the dirt clings most.

Who the model is for

  • Modelers of modern Bundeswehr and NATO vehicles
  • Collectors of the family of vehicles derived from the Leopard 2
  • Builders of dioramas on technical and engineer themes
  • More experienced modelers who want to work with a crane and a winch

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is based on the chassis of the main battle tank Leopard 2, with which it shares its running gear and its powerplant.

It is an armored recovery vehicle. It pulls out stuck and damaged vehicles, tows them away and makes repairs in the field possible, for example changing a powerplant with the crane.

Yes. Both are in 1:35 scale and in real service these vehicles work together, so the pair makes sense in a diorama.

The standard is the three-tone NATO camouflage. It looks best sprayed with an airbrush over a filler primer, completed with a dark wash and dust pigments.
