The second part of a numbered series of decal sheets for figures in 1:35 scale. It is used to transfer German uniform insignia of the Second World War onto finished, painted figures. It is not a kit and not a figure, but a detailing accessory: it makes sense once you have the figures built and want to give them faithful insignia that would be hard to paint with a brush at this scale.

Why uniform insignia are done with decals

In 1:35 scale the insignia on a uniform are only a few tenths of a millimeter across. Painting by hand at that size usually ends in an illegible blob, whereas a decal holds both the shape and a thin line. The second reason is consistency: if one scene contains several figures, decals make sure they all have insignia of the same size in the same place. Hand painting at this size always drifts a little, and on a finished diorama the eye spots it sooner than you would expect.

Use and tips

• Finish the uniform and give it a gloss or satin clear coat
• Lift the decal out of the water with tweezers and slide it into place with a brush, not with your finger
• Let the decal softener work undisturbed until the decal has dried
• If necessary add a fine wash into the folds under the decal
• Unify the finished figure with a matte clear coat
