A model of the Israeli M113 armored personnel carrier as it stood in 1973, in 1:35 scale. The subject is the most widely used tracked carrier of the Western world in its Israeli form.
Responsibility details are not available.
The M113 has been built since the early nineteen sixties and remains the most widely used tracked personnel carrier of the Western world. Its main trick is the material: the boxy hull is welded from aluminum alloy, so the vehicle stayed light, could swim and could be moved by air, yet it still withstood splinters and small arms fire. It was precisely the combination of a low price and easy maintenance that made it the chassis for dozens of further versions.
The Israeli army took to it early and the Hebrew designation nagmash, meaning armored personnel carrier, became established for it. The machines that went into the fighting of the Yom Kippur War in October 1973 were still in a fairly bare form: without the later add-on armor and shields, but often with extra machine guns at the commander's hatch and with equipment piled on the hull. That is exactly the state the subject of this model captures.
Two things add most to the believability. First the baggage, tarpaulins, drums and crates on the roof, because Israeli vehicles drove around loaded and a bare hull looks empty. Second the dust: the Sinai sand settled mainly on the underside, on the tracks and in the shadow under the fenders, whereas the upper surfaces were bleached by the sun. It pays to mix the basic green-gray shade lighter than the color standard would suggest, otherwise the model goes dark and indistinct once it is dusted.
