About product

Roof tiles 1:35 for building houses and ruins

A broken roof is one of the most rewarding subjects on a diorama - it is exactly there that you can tell whether the modeler really built the scene or merely assembled it. This set brings roof tiles in 1:35 scale from which you lay the surface of a roof, a damaged roof structure or a pile of rubble by a wall. It is neither a finished house nor a kit; it is building material that you lay out on the scene yourself.

How to lay the tiles

The tiles are laid from the bottom upward with an overlap, so that each row covers the upper part of the one before - just as on a real roof. It pays to mark the spacing of the rows lightly on the backing board first, otherwise the slope goes astray. On a ruin the irregular damage is the key: a missing piece, a shifted tile, a collapsed section with the battens exposed. Do not throw the broken pieces away; heaped under the eaves they make the most credible rubble.

Gluing and painting

  • Test the glue on one piece - the material decides whether to use a dispersion, a cyanoacrylate or a thicker assembly glue.
  • Paint only after the surface has been glued down; individually painted tiles glue less well and the joints then have to be touched up afterwards.
  • Keep the base of the roof in one tone and only then randomly repaint individual tiles into warmer and cooler variants.
  • A wash run into the gaps does the work for you: it underlines the rows and ties the surface together without drawing each gap separately.
  • Moss and deposits belong on the lower edges, in sheltered corners and by the chimney, not evenly over the whole roof.

Who the material is for

For builders of dioramas with buildings, ruins and village scenes in 1:35 scale and for modelers who build the architecture of a scene their own way instead of using a ready-made casting of a building.

The set is building material for a scene - laying, gluing and painting are expected. The backing board, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. It is material for building a scene - the tiles are laid on a backing of your own and glued into the surface of a roof.

Look for the number and the coverage on the packaging; when planning a larger roof it is better to work out the area in advance.

We recommend afterwards. A glued surface takes a wash easily, which underlines the rows, and you do not have to touch up the joints.

Leave out several tiles irregularly, shift one or two out of the row and heap the broken pieces under the eaves. Regular damage looks unconvincing.
