An injection-molded plastic kit of the Soviet SU-18 self-propelled gun in 1:35 scale from the Hobby Boss brand. The model follows on from the range of vehicles that the same maker builds on the chassis of the first Soviet production tank, the T-18.
The SU-18 was among the first Soviet attempts to put a gun on a tracked chassis. It grew out of the T-18 light tank, also known as the MS-1, whose hull received an open superstructure with a 76.2 mm gun meant for direct infantry support. The work went on at the turn of the nineteen twenties and thirties, when Soviet industry was still looking for the shape of self-propelled artillery. The vehicle never reached large-scale production, but the experience from it fed into later Soviet self-propelled guns. For a modeler it is an unusual subject, and in a display case it shows well what vehicles looked like before the classic tank destroyers arrived.
A small chassis means small parts, so have tweezers and liquid cement for plastic ready. Assemble and paint the running gear before you close the hull up. The open superstructure is on view, so paint the inside and pick it out lightly before you fit the side plates. The base is a primer and an even coat of Soviet green, and the area around the gun stands out best after a dark wash and light edge highlighting.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
