A section of paved waterfront cast in polyurethane resin belongs to the family of small diorama bases from the Italian brand Royal Model. According to the manufacturer the base has a footprint of 4x4 cm, so it will comfortably carry one figure, a stack of crates or a small machine. The surface is made up of irregularly laid stone blocks and the edge of the quay with its coping.
The stone quays of Mediterranean and northern ports were built of dressed blocks between which water, weed and sand collect. It is exactly this texture that makes a quay rewarding groundwork: a single section brings together smooth paving, a roughly worked edge and the transition to the surface of the water. Add a mooring ring or a few sacks and the scene starts to tell a story about supply work.
Free the base of grease in a lukewarm bath, dry it and undercoat it with primer. Stone looks convincing when several thinned tones of gray, ocher and greenish are laid over a light undercoat, a glaze darkens the gaps and a dry brush picks out the raised edges. The lower part at the waterline will take a darker and greener shade. The water surface can be added with modeling gel.
It is sold as an unworked casting without paints.
