About product

1:35 Turtle - a Mikromir kit of a submersible craft

This kit in 1:35 scale represents Turtle, a one-man submersible craft of the 18th century. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Beware of the coincidence of names: it is not the Skoda PA-II armored car, which was also nicknamed Zelva, meaning turtle, nor a Korean turtle ship - the subject really is the wooden submersible Turtle. The contents of the set are given in the enclosed instructions.

The real subject

Turtle was a small one-man submersible built in 1775 in Connecticut. The hull was egg-shaped and assembled from oak sections drawn together with iron fittings and sealed; the crew was a single man, who turned the propellers by hand and at the same time worked the rudder, the ballast tank and a hand pump. Depth was controlled by letting water into and forcing it out of a tank in the bottom of the hull, and orientation below the surface relied on simple instruments with phosphorescent markings. In 1776 an attempt was made in New York harbor to fix a charge to the hull of an anchored ship; although it was unsuccessful, Turtle is cited as the first submersible craft used in a combat action.

Building and painting tips

The model is small and stands or falls on the surface of the hull. It pays to sand the joint of the two halves carefully and to suggest the texture of the wooden sections - thin grooves and uneven shades of brown will give the hull depth to scale. Bring out the fittings and the binding bands in a dark metal shade and with a fine wash that runs into the grooves. Before the final varnish, unify the surface with a matte overcoat. Because this is a craft with no conventional waterline, it looks good on a simple stand or in a small display-case scene with a caption.

Who the model is for

  • Anyone interested in the history of submersible navigation and early naval technology
  • Collectors of unconventional subjects outside the mainstream of kits
  • Modelers who want a quick yet unusual model for a display case
  • Builders of small dioramas and scenes with a caption

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is a model of a submersible craft in 1:35 scale. The nickname Zelva, meaning turtle, was also carried by the Skoda PA-II armored car, but that has nothing to do with this kit.

The number of parts and the exact contents of the package are given in the instructions enclosed in the box.

The subject is simple and small, so the build is manageable even with little practice. The result, though, depends a great deal on the surface finish of the hull and on the painting.

The contents of the package are given in the instructions enclosed in the box. The model also looks good on a simple stand of your own or in a small scene.
