1:35 Tyrannosaurus

Tyrannosaurus, a Tamiya dinosaur model, 1:35 scale

A collector's plastic model of the predatory dinosaur Tyrannosaurus rex in 1:35 scale from Tamiya, from the manufacturer's prehistoric world series. The model is conceived with a limited number of parts and a straightforward build, so beginners and younger modelers can manage it too. It is not a vehicle but a model of a prehistoric animal, so approach the building and the painting as work on a living creature rather than on a machine. The instructions in the box state the exact number of parts.

The real subject

Tyrannosaurus rex is probably the most famous of all dinosaurs, a massive two-legged predator of the end of the Cretaceous that lived in what is now North America. It reached a length of around twelve meters and became famous for its massive skull with dagger-like teeth adapted to tearing meat. Despite its short forelimbs it was the apex predator of its day, and its powerful hind legs and jaws made it a feared hunter as well as a scavenger.

Building and painting tips

Glue the parts with cement for plastic and sand the seams on the body carefully for a smooth transition of the skin. Apply a primer before painting. Paint the skin with an airbrush from a darker back to a lighter belly and soften the transitions. Bring out the texture of the scales and the folds with a dark wash in the recesses and a dry brush over the raised areas. The real colors of dinosaurs are not known, so you have creative freedom, from earthy tones to bolder predator patterns. Finish the mouth and the teeth in contrast.
