This injection-molded plastic set from Trumpeter contains Su-27K shipboard fighters in the tiny 1:350 scale. This is the scale in which large ship models are built, so these aircraft serve above all to fill the flight deck and the hangar of an aircraft carrier model. The parts are small and both the building and the painting are work with small pieces.
The Su-27K, later designated Su-33, is the shipboard variant of the heavy Sukhoi Su-27 fighter, Flanker in the NATO code designation. To operate from a deck it received folding outer wing and horizontal tail sections, a strengthened landing gear, an arrestor hook and forward canards for better behavior at low speeds. It took off without a catapult, under its own power from an inclined bow ramp. In the Russian naval air arm it made up the air group of the single Russian aircraft carrier.
In this scale cleanliness decides everything. Cut the parts off with a sharp scalpel and sand the sprue stubs rather than nipping them, so that they do not crack. It is practical to paint the aircraft while they are still on the sprue and assemble them afterwards. Do not emphasize the engraved lines strongly in a scale this small; a very thinned wash is enough, otherwise the model coarsens visually. Folded wings look convincing on the deck, because they match the way the real aircraft are arranged when they are not flying. The clear sections of the canopy can also be replaced with a thin layer of gloss varnish.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
