A kit of the American LCAC landing hovercraft in 1:350 scale from Trumpeter. It is a small craft that most often appears in a display case in two roles: as a stand-alone model on a base, or as an escort for a large amphibious ship or an aircraft carrier in the same scale, where it gives the scene both scale and action.
LCAC stands for Landing Craft Air Cushion. The US Navy introduced it in the 1980s as a replacement for conventional landing craft with a hull. The hovercraft is loaded into the floodable well deck of large amphibious ships, drives out of it under its own power and puts its load straight onto the beach. That is its main advantage: it needs neither a harbor nor a prepared shore and it crosses shallows and surf where a conventional craft would stop. It is driven by gas turbines and ducted pusher propellers, and its load is equipment, supplies and ground troops.
With such a small craft, clean work decides everything. Cut the castings with a margin and level the edges so that no burrs remain, as they would look like glaring flaws in 1:350. Paint the flexible skirt around the hull in a darker tone than the craft itself, which gives it depth. Fit the propeller ducts and the frame only after the hull is painted. If you are preparing the model for a water surface, bear in mind that a hovercraft leaves spray and a mist of water behind it, not a classic wake.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
