A set of masking templates from the Czech maker Omask, made to fit the F-86F Sabre kit in 1:48 scale from Hasegawa. The most important point first: this is not a model and not a kit. You are buying an accessory for painting only; the Sabre kit itself is not included in the package and you have to own it or buy it separately.
The masks are cut precisely to the shapes of the parts of that kit. This does away with the most tiresome part of masking — trimming tape by hand with a scalpel directly on fragile glazing. The result is straight, sharp canopy frames with no paint bleeding under the edge.
The North American F-86 Sabre was a first-generation American jet fighter and one of the symbols of the Korean War. It made its name above all for its swept wing, which gave it the performance it needed for combat with contemporary Soviet fighters over what was called MiG Alley. The F-86F variant was among the most capable production versions and was used by a number of countries long after the conflict ended. Characteristic features of the type are the circular nose intake and the clean, elegant silhouette.
Lift the masks off the sheet with tweezers, place them on the part and press the whole edge down carefully — it is the adhesion of the edge that decides whether paint bleeds. On canopy frames it pays to spray the cockpit interior shade first and only then the airframe color; the transition then looks natural. Apply the paint with an airbrush in thin coats. The Sabre is also often built in bare metal, and polished metal shades forgive fewer mistakes than matte paints — which makes accurate masks all the more worthwhile. Remove the mask while the paint is freshly dry to the touch.
