About product

The real subject

The FM-2 Wildcat is the late version of the Wildcat carrier fighter, built by General Motors for small escort carriers. It differs from the earlier Wildcats in a lightened airframe and above all in the powerplant: instead of a twin-row radial it received the nine-cylinder Wright R-1820 Cyclone radial with a single row of cylinders. The shorter engine with wider spacing between the cylinders is clearly visible under an open cowling and is one of the things by which the version is recognized.

What the set contains

The accessory replaces the simplified engine from the kit with a precisely rendered assembly complete with cylinder heads, plumbing and fittings of a kind that cannot be produced on a plastic part. The parts are printed on a 3D printer, so the detail is crisp and the walls come out very thin. The shaping matches the FM-2 kits in 1:48 scale from Eduard.

Building and painting tips

The parts are held on print supports. Snip them off with sharp cutters or cut them with a blade a little way from the part and sand the small remains down carefully, so that the fins on the cylinder heads are not damaged. The material is not polystyrene, so glue with cyanoacrylate glue. Before painting, wash the parts in lukewarm soapy water so that no print resin residue is left on the surface, and let them dry. It is worth painting the engine and picking out its detail before it goes into the cowling, because once that is closed you can no longer reach it. The detailed procedure is given in the manufacturer's instructions.

Who it is for

The set is meant for modelers who want to build the model with the cowling open, or at least to achieve a convincing view through the front of the cowling. The package contains only the parts of the engine set. The kit, paints and glue are not part of the delivery, unless stated otherwise.

According to the manufacturer, FM-2 models in 1:48 scale from Eduard.

Cut the print supports with a sharp blade a little way from the part and sand the remains down. They are glued with cyanoacrylate glue; ordinary cement for polystyrene does not work.

Yes. Washing in lukewarm soapy water removes the print resin residue, and the paint then holds considerably better.
