About product

PZL P-7A Flugzeugfuhrerschule in 1:72 scale from Mistercraft

An injection-molded plastic kit in 1:72 scale from the Polish maker Mistercraft. The boxing is aimed at PZL P.7a machines in German service: after 1939 the Germans put some of the captured Polish fighters back into service and used them as trainers in a flying school (Flugzeugführerschule). It is exactly these markings that the decal sheet is aimed at. Mistercraft commonly releases older, reused molds in its program, so it is fair to expect simpler technology, thicker plastic and the need for sanding and filling. After a little work, though, you will have an interesting model of an aircraft you will not find elsewhere in 1:72.

The real subject

The PZL P.7a was a Polish fighter of the early 1930s and, in the years 1933 to 1935, the main fighter type of the Polish Air Force. It was an all-metal high-wing monoplane with a duralumin skin; at a time when most of the world's fighters were still wood-and-fabric biplanes, that was a markedly modern machine. Its most conspicuous feature is the cranked gull wing, designed so that nothing would block the pilot's view forward and upward; this shape became the hallmark of the Polish design school. It was powered by a radial engine and its armament was two machine guns. By 1939 the P.7a was already obsolete and stood no chance against the modern German types; most of the surviving machines fell into German hands, and the best preserved of them then served for pilot training.

Building and painting tips

Check the parts first, dress the flash off and try the fit dry, above all on the engine cowling and the fuselage joint, where filler and wet sanding tend to be needed. The cockpit is small, but on a high-wing monoplane it is visible, so basic fitting out and belts pay off. Glue the wing struts only once the fuselage has dried, and use a support during assembly so that you keep the angles. Paint over a primer, ideally with an airbrush, and spray a gloss varnish before the decals; with older decals that pays off twice over, because they tend to be stiffer and follow the surface less well.

Who the model is for

  • Anyone interested in the Polish Air Force of the 1930s and in prewar designs
  • Modelers drawn to the less usual training service of captured machines
  • Builders with experience of simpler molds who are not afraid of filler
  • Collectors in 1:72 scale looking for an unusual addition to a collection

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
