About product

AV-8A Harrier USMC - a 1:48 Kinetic kit

A plastic kit of the AV-8A Harrier in the equipment of the United States Marine Corps, in 1:48 from the manufacturer Kinetic. The 1:48 scale is a rewarding one for combat aircraft: the model has enough size for the detail of the cockpit, the landing gear and the stores to show, while still fitting into an ordinary display case. The AV-8A is the American version of the British Harrier operated by the Marine Corps, and it differs from the later Harrier versions in wing shape, equipment and overall silhouette, so the build has to keep to that particular version.

The real subject

The Harrier was the first combat aircraft in series service capable of short takeoff and vertical landing. The key to that is an engine with vectoring nozzles, which by swiveling the direction of the exhaust gases allow takeoff from a short runway, from the deck of a smaller ship and from improvised surfaces. It was precisely that capability that determined how the aircraft was used: it could operate close to the units it supported, without depending on long concrete runways. The AV-8A version was derived from the British type and in American service it flew with the Marine Corps as a close support machine. Characteristic features of the airframe are the side engine intakes, the high-set wing and the outrigger landing gear units at the wingtips.

Building and painting tips

Finish and paint the cockpit and the gear bays before you close the fuselage; after that you cannot reach them. Check the fuselage and wing root joints dry and fill and sand any gaps, which show most on aircraft with a pronounced change of shape. Spray gloss varnish before the decals so that they adhere and the edges do not stand out, and even the surface out with a matte or semi-matte varnish once it has dried. Darken and shade the nozzles and the area around the exhaust; on this subject that is a place the eye goes to. Assemble and paint the stores separately and fit them only at the end.

Who the model is for

  • Modelers of combat aircraft in 1:48
  • Anyone interested in short takeoff and vertical landing equipment
  • Collectors of United States Marine Corps aircraft
  • Builders with basic experience of building aircraft

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The AV-8A is the early American version derived from the British type. It differs from the later versions in wing shape, equipment and overall silhouette, so keep to that version when building and marking it.

The engine has vectoring nozzles, and swiveling them changes the direction of the exhaust gases. That lets the aircraft manage a short takeoff and a vertical landing.

The number of parts and of decal schemes is stated by the manufacturer on the packaging and in the instructions.

A builder with basic aircraft experience can manage it. Care is needed over the fuselage and wing root joints and over finishing the cockpit before the fuselage is closed.
