About product

The tail rotor of the Black Hawk in 1:48 scale

An accessory set with a replacement tail rotor for models of the MH-60L and UH-60A helicopters, that is, machines of the Black Hawk family, cut for the ICM kit in 1:48 scale. It replaces the tail rotor from the kit with finished parts.

Why the tail rotor in particular

The tail rotor of the Black Hawk is not just a vertical propeller: it carries four blades and is canted relative to the vertical tail, so modeler and layman alike recognize it in the silhouette of the machine. It is at the same time the thinnest place on the model. The blades of an injection-molded part tend, because of the mold, to be thicker than the scale would call for, and the rotor head stays simplified. The replacement part holds the thin section of the blade and the intricate head, where the individual hinges and control rods are visible.

Building and painting tips

  • The parts are not polystyrene, so use cyanoacrylate glue to fit them.
  • Cut the excess material off with a sharp blade a little way from the part and sand the rest away.
  • Wash and degrease the parts before painting; the exact procedure is given in the manufacturer's instructions.
  • Fit the rotor dry and check how it is canted relative to the vertical tail.
  • The blades are thin and fragile, so leave them until the end of the build.

Painting and wear

The blades are dark and smooth, so every layer of paint shows on them. Spray them evenly and matte, otherwise they will shine where they curve. On a machine in service the leading edges are worn by dust and sand, which can be suggested with a thin light abrasion along the edge and a gentle pull of the edges with a dry brush. The real machine carries markings on the blades too, but look for their form in references for the particular aircraft.

Who the set is for

For builders of the Black Hawk in 1:48 scale from the ICM kit who are bothered by thick blades and a coarse rotor head. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The MH-60L and UH-60A kits from ICM in 1:48 scale. On a model from another manufacturer the shapes of the parts need not match.

Thinner blades and a more detailed rotor head with hinges and control rods. An injection-molded part tends, because of the mold, to be thicker than the scale calls for.

They are not polystyrene, and cement for polystyrene will not join them. Use cyanoacrylate glue and wash and degrease the mating faces beforehand.

At the end of the build. The blades are thin and are easily damaged while handling the model, so just check the fit dry in advance.
