1:48 US P-61A Black Widow is an injection-molded plastic kit of the American twin-engine night fighter from Northrop, made by Hobby Boss.
Responsibility details are not available.
A plastic kit of the twin-boom night fighter Northrop P-61 in the A variant, that is in the form of the first production series. On an aircraft this large the 1:48 scale is a great advantage: the engine nacelles, the central nacelle with the cockpit and the broken-up landing gear bays all have enough room to show. The kit is supplied by the Chinese manufacturer Hobby Boss, which has long focused on large American types.
The P-61 Black Widow was the first American aircraft designed from the start as a night fighter with onboard radar. It was powered by a pair of Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp radial engines, the main armament was 20 mm cannon in the lower part of the central nacelle, and some machines also carried a remotely operated dorsal turret. The crew was a pilot and a radar operator, and depending on the equipment of the machine a gunner joined them. The A version was the first production form of the type and went into action from 1944 in the Pacific and over Europe.
On a twin-boom design it pays to assemble the tail booms and the wing dry and check that once finished the model stands level on all three wheels. A night black finish is treacherous in that it swallows all the detail, so building it up in thin coats and shading the panels slightly works well. A gloss intermediate coat helps under the decals, with matte varnish only at the very end.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
