The Grumman F-14 Tomcat is an American carrier fighter with a variable-geometry wing and a crew of two, the pilot in front and the weapon systems officer behind him. The F-14D version was the last and most modern in the line. It is precisely the two cockpits one behind the other that make the interior of this type rewarding work: the glazing gives a view into both stations, and empty tubs give a finished model away even in a small scale.
The set brings colored interior elements made by printing, with a raised surface, so the instruments and controls have real relief rather than just a print. The elements are printed on backing decal paper and have no adhesive layer of their own: the part is cut out, soaked in lukewarm water for about fifteen seconds and slid off the paper into place. The set is prepared for the kit from Tamiya in 1:72 scale.
First spray the surfaces under the elements, go over them with a gloss varnish such as Future, Klear or Tamiya X-22 and let them dry properly; the element holds best on a smooth, glossy, degreased layer. Cut the individual parts out with a sharp blade, soak them, slide them off the paper and fine-tune the position with a brush while the base is still damp. Draw off the excess water, press the element down with a cotton bud and work in stages on curved walls; in a deep corner a drop of cyanoacrylate helps. Do not use a decal softener or setter, as they would attack the printed resin. Plan the work so that the interior is finished before you close the fuselage, because after that you will not get into the cockpits.
The set is for modelers who want the inside of both cockpits readable without laborious painting of tiny instruments. The interior elements are supplied on their own. The kit, paints and glue are not included, unless stated otherwise.
