The FM-1 is the Wildcat carrier fighter produced during the Second World War under license by the Eastern Aircraft division of the General Motors corporation. Grumman was concentrating at the time on the larger and more powerful Hellcat, and so it handed production of the proven predecessor over to another enterprise. Compared with the F4F-4 version, which carried six machine guns, the FM-1 went back to four barrels with a larger ammunition supply, which lengthened the time the crew could keep firing. The machine had a Twin Wasp radial engine, folding wings for stowage aboard ship and landing gear retracted into the fuselage by a hand crank. It served mainly from small escort carriers, where on a short deck it could work even where heavier types did not stand up.
It is a set of photo-etched parts in 1:72 scale for a model of the FM-1. Etched metal will bring into a small scale a drawing a few tenths of a millimeter thick, of a kind an injection-molded part cannot have. What exactly the set contains and which kit it is cut for is determined by the manufacturer's part number and the enclosed instructions.
Cut the tabs through with a sharp blade on a hard surface, and do not break the parts off. Make the bend along the marked score line in one movement. The sheet is not made of polystyrene, so you will join it with cyanoacrylate glue applied in a minute amount. Before painting, wash and degrease the parts and spray them with a base coat, otherwise you will rub the finish off during the rest of the handling. Apply the paint in thin layers; a thick layer will flood the fine drawing that photo-etched metal is bought for. Pick the finished parts up with tweezers through a piece of paper, as fingerprints show in a finish.
