About product

Grumman Wildcat Mk.VI 1:72, a photo-etched set of the Zoom range (Eduard)

This is a colored Eduard photo-etched set of the Zoom range in 1:72 scale, that is an accessory for a plastic model, not the model itself. Zoom sets make particularly good sense in a small scale: the cockpit here is so tiny that the color printing of a photo-etched panel does more than any hand painting of plastic relief. The set concentrates on the most visible elements of the cockpit, the instrument panel and the restraint belts. A more extensive photo-etched set for the same aircraft is sold separately.

The real subject

The Wildcat Mk.VI is the British designation of the carrier fighter aircraft that came about as a lightened version of the Grumman design and was built under license by General Motors under the American designation FM-2. Compared with the earlier Wildcats it received a single-row Wright radial engine and a taller vertical tail surface, which compensated for the altered moments. The aim of the lightening was operation from the short decks of escort carriers, where heavier and more powerful fighter aircraft could not be operated. With British naval aviation the type served until the end of the war.

Building and painting tips

In 1:72 scale the main enemies are static electricity and a draft, so work over a tray with low rims and pick the parts up with a dampened tip of tweezers. An illuminated magnifier or a head magnifier is a great help. Sand the relief of the instruments on the plastic part away, but carefully, as in this scale the wall is thin. Dose the glue in an amount that is barely visible, best of all with the point of a needle. Do not overdo the shaping of the restraint belts in 1:72; a slight curve is enough. Close the cockpit up only once everything has dried completely and been unified with a flat clear coat.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of the Wildcat Mk.VI in 1:72 scale
  • Modelers who want a readable instrument panel even in a small scale
  • Those who build models out of the box and want one targeted accessory
  • More experienced modelers used to small parts

The set is an accessory for a plastic model and is not a stand-alone kit. The model, glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

The British designation of the lightened version of the Wildcat carrier fighter aircraft, built under license by General Motors under the designation FM-2.

It is not. It is a photo-etched accessory for a plastic model, which has to be bought separately.

Quite the opposite. It is precisely in a small scale that color printing has the greatest effect, because hand painting the dials is practically impossible here.

A sharp scalpel, fine tweezers, cyanoacrylate glue and ideally a magnifier with a light.
