A short-run injection-molded plastic model of the bomber Martin Model 139 / WH-1 in 1:72 scale from Special Hobby. The Model 139 was the export version of the American bomber known to the USAAC as the B-10. This boxing captures the early WH-1 variant delivered to the Dutch East Indies and offers decals for aircraft of the Dutch colonial air service ML-KNIL and of the Royal Thai Air Force. It is short-run production for more experienced modelers.
The Martin Model 139 (B-10) was a breakthrough all-metal twin-engine bomber of the early 1930s with a cantilever wing, retractable landing gear and enclosed cockpits. It was so fast that at the time it appeared it outran contemporary fighters. Export aircraft for the Dutch East Indies were powered by Wright R-1820 Cyclone radial engines; the WH-1 version differed from the later WH-2 in the engines and cowlings. These bombers were sent into action by the Dutch colonial army against the Japanese invasion at the beginning of 1942.
With short-run kits, reckon on more careful cleaning up of the parts, preparation of the mating surfaces and possibly filling the joints. Glue the plastic with liquid modeling cement for plastic. Apply a primer before painting and spray with an airbrush in thin coats; the ML-KNIL color schemes with blue and yellow elements call for precise masking. Apply the decals over a gloss surface.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
