A photo-etched detail set from the Czech manufacturer Eduard of Obrnice near Most, intended to add detail to a plastic model of the F-4EJ Phantom in 1:72 scale. By its designation it covers both the cockpit and the external details of the airframe. The parts are etched from thin sheet metal and replace or supplement simplified plastic parts. The set does not make up a model — you need a matching plastic kit to go with it.
In the small 1:72 scale, injection-molded plastic is necessarily coarser on small elements than the real thing. Etched sheet metal gives the thinness back — in the cockpit typically on the instrument panels and the belts, on the exterior on small covers, grilles and panels. The particular breakdown of parts is given in the manufacturer's instructions.
The F-4EJ is the Japanese version of the twin-engine two-seat F-4 Phantom II derived from the F-4E variant. The airframe is all-metal, with markedly upturned wing tips and drooped horizontal tail surfaces; a shape as complex as this makes the Phantom a rewarding object for detailing.
Separate the parts with a sharp scalpel on a hard surface, not with pliers — in 1:72 scale the pieces really are tiny. Make the bends in a bending tool. Degrease the metal and glue it with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue) or with an adhesive made for photo-etched parts; ordinary plastic cement will not join metal. Fit the interior parts before the fuselage is glued together, and the external ones only after the surface has been sanded and primed, so that they do not break off during sanding. On bare metal use a base color made for metal.
This is an accessory for a model, not the model itself. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
