About product

Bf 109 G-6 - air intake, 1:72 (Quickboost / Aires)

A resin detail set for a model of the Messerschmitt Bf 109 G-6 in 1:72 scale. It is not a kit: the package contains no fuselage, wings or decals. Its content is the air intake, which replaces the corresponding part from the base kit. Intended for Tamiya kits.

Why replace the air intake

An air intake is an opening, and a plastic part from a mold tends to be closed off or so thick-walled that it looks like a solid lump stuck onto the cowling. Resin can manage a thin wall and an open, through intake that you can see into; only then does the intake look real. In 1:72 scale the difference shows all the more: the smaller the model, the more disproportionately coarse the thickness of the plastic looks. Replacing one tiny part thus lifts the whole forward fuselage, which is where everyone looks.

The real subject

The Bf 109 G-6, nicknamed the Gustav, is the most produced version of the most produced German fighter of the Second World War. You recognize it by the characteristic bulges over the fairings of the fuselage machine guns, which appeared once heavier thirteen-millimeter weapons with a bulkier breech replaced the light machine guns; hence the nickname Beule, meaning bump. The engine cowling of the Gustav is asymmetrical in other ways too: the supercharger intake of the DB 605 engine projects from the left side and is one of the most prominent details of the whole aircraft.

Usage tips

Do not bond the resin part with cement for plastic models: polystyrene cement does not dissolve resin and the joint will not hold. Reach for super glue (cyanoacrylate) or epoxy. Cut the part from the casting block with a fine saw and level the mating surface, so that the intake does not sit crooked on the cowling. Before painting, wash it in lukewarm soapy water so that the mold release agent disappears. Always sand wet: resin dust is harmful to health and must not be inhaled. It is worth spraying the inside of the intake before gluing, because a brush will not reach in there afterwards.

Who the set is for

  • builders of the Bf 109 G-6 in 1:72 by Tamiya
  • modelers who are bothered by a closed-off or thick-walled intake
  • anyone interested in German fighters of the Second World War
  • those who dare to tackle a tiny resin part

This is a detail accessory, not a model. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

No. It is a detail accessory, the air intake alone. The base Bf 109 G-6 kit in 1:72 by Tamiya has to be bought separately.

An air intake is supposed to be an opening. The plastic part tends to be closed off or to have walls so thick that it looks like a solid molding. Resin allows a thin wall and an open, through intake, which is very clearly visible in 1:72 scale.

With super glue (cyanoacrylate) or two-part epoxy. Polystyrene cement does not work on resin.

Cut the part from the casting block rather than breaking it off, wash the mold release agent off before painting and sand exclusively wet, as resin dust is harmful to health. Paint the inside of the intake before gluing it on.
