A plastic kit of the MiG-17F fighter in 1:72 scale from Airfix. It covers the Chinese license version built as the Shenyang J-5 as well.
Responsibility details are not available.
The MiG-17 is a Soviet subsonic fighter that followed on from the older MiG-15 and differed from it above all in a new, more sharply swept wing and a longer fuselage. The MiG-17F version received a powerplant with an afterburner, a turbojet rather than a turbofan. In the West the type was listed under the code name Fresco. In China the aircraft was built under license as the Shenyang J-5, and in that form it entered the inventories of a number of further states.
This is a conventional injection-molded kit in polystyrene. In the box you will find the parts on sprues, a decal sheet and building instructions. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted, so the build counts on cement for polystyrene and on paints.
Start with the cockpit and the instrument panel, as once the fuselage is glued you cannot reach them. Sand the joints on the fuselage and on the leading edge of the wing with fine paper and restore the panel lines in them, so that they do not disappear after filling. Mask the canopy before spraying rather than after the paint has dried. Apply the decals over a smooth gloss base, otherwise a matte rim will be left under them.
The set will please collectors of Cold War aircraft as well as modelers who want to build a MiG-15 and a MiG-17 side by side. The build is manageable even for less experienced hands and calls for no special tools. Paints, glue and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
