The Curtiss P-40 was an American fighter that fought on practically every front of the Second World War, and in many countries it formed the backbone of the fighter force at a time when more modern types were only coming into service. The main landing gear rotated in flight so that the wheel lay flat in the wing, so on a parked aircraft the wheel is clearly visible from the side and from the front, and its shape is among the recognition features of the type.
The set replaces the main landing gear wheels with separate parts for 1:72 scale. The tire has a block tread, the hub a drawn-out outline and raised detail. The parts are made for P-40 models; with a particular kit, check the diameter of the wheel and of the stub it fits onto beforehand, and compare the tread with a photograph of the aircraft you are building, because P-40s flew with several tire patterns.
The parts are not polystyrene, so bond them with super glue. Cut the surplus material away with a sharp blade a little clear of the part and sand off the rest so that the round outline of the tire is preserved and the tread is not damaged. Before painting, wash and degrease the wheels. It pays to spray the tire and the hub separately and touch up the line between them with a brush; leave fitting the wheels until after the underside of the model has been painted. The exact way to prepare the parts is given in the manufacturer's instructions.
The set suits modelers of American fighters who want to improve the most visible part of the landing gear without touching the rest of the build. The swap is simple and even a less experienced builder can manage it.
