British aircraft of the Second World War carried large letters on the sides of the fuselage: a pair identified the squadron and one letter on its own the particular machine within it. The decals from a kit cover only a few machines, and as soon as you want to build an aircraft that is not in the instructions, those very letters are what you lack. A sheet of loose characters solves that, because you put the combination together yourself, character by character, from a photograph or a publication you have.
The characters are in dull red, that is in the shade the night bombers carried. On dark night camouflage the code was to stay legible from close up but not to show up at a distance, and dark red does that better than white or light gray. The number 48 in the name matches the height of the character on the real aircraft in inches, that is roughly 1219 millimeters; in 1:72 scale that works out as a letter about 17 millimeters high. How many characters the sheet carries is given by the manufacturer.
These are waterslide decals. First stick a strip of masking tape on the fuselage as a guide line, so that the letters sit at one height. Clear-coat the surface with gloss varnish, otherwise air will be trapped under the decal and a matte outline will stay around the character. Cut each character off separately and soak it in lukewarm water until it begins to release from the backing. While there is water under it, it can be moved; after that, press the water out with a soft cloth from the center toward the edges. On a broken surface, decal softener helps, used according to the instructions on its packaging. Go over the finished area with matte varnish.
The model, the paints, the varnishes and the softener are not included in the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
