Five marking options in 1:72 for late-production Thunderbolts, mainly for the fast P-47M version fielded with the 56th Fighter Group in 1945.
Responsibility details are not available.
The M version was created as an answer to the V-1 missiles and to the Messerschmitt jets. It received the R-2800 engine with water injection and strengthened airbrakes, and in level flight it got past seven hundred kilometers per hour. Barely a hundred and thirty examples were built and a single unit used it in combat, once again the 56th Fighter Group.
Four of the five options on the sheet belong to machines of exactly this version from the spring of 1945. The aircraft 44-21150 named Dottie Dee II with the letters UN-M was flown by Captain Charles McBath of the 63rd Fighter Squadron, 44-21127 with the inscription Pengie V belonged to Captain Boleslaw Gladych and 44-21112 carried the name Ugly Ducking and was flown by Lieutenant George Bostwick. The fifth option reaches half a year back: 44-19718, called Pengie IV, is a P-47D-28 of November 1944, that is the predecessor on which the same Polish pilot flew before he was re-equipped.
The machines of the late production batches carried flat olive or neutral gray paint and large national insignia with stripes, and personal inscriptions on top of that. It is exactly the names on the noses that make this sheet a rewarding basis for models that are meant to tell a story.
The decals are prepared for a finished 1:72 model of a Thunderbolt with a bubble canopy.
The personal inscriptions on the noses of American fighters were made by hand and never copy the panel lines exactly. While applying them it pays to let the motif float for a while on a drop of water and to fine-tune its position against a photograph, and only then to press the water out.
