A metallic finish is something other than a solid color. Light in it is not reflected from the surface but from countless metal flakes suspended beneath it, and that is why an area changes its tone with the angle of view. In a reduced scale that impression only comes about when the coat is thin and the base is smooth.
The shade is aimed at the bodywork of cars and racing cars, at the tanks and fenders of motorcycles, at the fairings of sport aircraft and at accessories that are meant to look expensive. It is also used wherever a builder needs a deep red with a depth that an ordinary opaque paint can never give.
Slow layering makes the work easier. Every pass of the airbrush lays down another portion of flakes, so the tone gradually darkens and gains sheen; a single heavy coat, on the other hand, creates patches in which the flakes clump together. The paint is thinned with water or with Acrysion Thinner, and the tools used are cleaned with Acrysion Tool Cleaner.
Anyone who wants to take the surface all the way to the impression of a real automotive finish goes over the finished area with a gloss clear coat and polishes it once dry. The metal particles are thereby sealed under a smooth layer and the reflection on the model will be continuous rather than grainy. The same method can be used on small areas too, for instance on the headlight covers of a racing car or on forged wheel rims.
