AUTUMN TUFTS 6MM

Autumn Tufts 6 mm (AK interactive)

Grass tufts in an autumn key, with a tuft height of 6 mm. Tufts differ from continuous static grass in that they are not scattered but placed one by one: each tuft is a finished clump glued to a particular spot. That is exactly what lets you break the terrain up: an overgrown verge, the edges of rails, the feet of walls and fences, the joints between paving slabs. The autumn coloring is a mix of yellowed and rusting tones, thanks to which the scene does not read as fresh spring but as the later part of the year, when the grass starts to dry out.

Use

• Six millimeters is a versatile medium height: in larger scales it matches ordinary uncut grass, in smaller ones more of a tall grassy growth.
• Place them irregularly and at varying density; a regular grid of tufts is the most common mistake that gives a diorama away.
• Tufts are excellent at hiding the joints between terrain boards, the edge of a base and the transition between materials.
• Thinning the edges out and trimming them slightly with scissors lets you grade the height and gives the scene depth.
• The autumn shade goes well with fallen leaves, dry vegetation and muddy effects on vehicles.

Who they are for

For builders of dioramas and display cases, railroad modelers and gamers who make bases and gaming terrain in an autumn key. The medium height makes them a good staple item that suits most scenes where the terrain is meant to be overgrown but not wild.
