Eight acrylic shades for the carrier aircraft of the Fleet Air Arm of the years 1939 to 1945.
Responsibility details are not available.
Naval aircraft had a different job from their land-based counterparts: to disappear over the water when seen from above and to blend with the sky when seen from below. Hence the pair of dark shades, a gray-blue and a gray-green, on the upper surfaces and a very light, greenish tone on the underside. The division was sharp and ran high on the sides of the fuselage, which on models tends to be the most demanding part of the whole spraying job.
Over six years the range of machines this set covers went through a considerable change. It starts with a fabric-covered torpedo biplane, goes on through a two-seat fighter and a heavy bomber with a cranked wing, and ends with fast types taken over from the United States and with the naval conversion of the famous fighter with the elliptical wing. The shades meanwhile stayed in one family, so the eight bottles cover the whole period.
There are several close grays in the set, and that is not a fault but the essence of the subject - it is precisely the fine difference between them that decides how the model reads. It pays to make a test card on a piece of plastic and only then choose. Black and white serve for markings and for lightening the highlights when shading.
The paints are water-thinnable, finely ground and prepared for the airbrush; with a brush expect several thin coats. The light underside tone covers less strongly than the dark upper shades, so it pays to spray it over a lighter base. A model, decals and thinner are not in the package.
