The dark earthy brown of British camouflage from the beginning of the Second World War. A lacquer modeling paint in a 10 ml bottle for spraying and for the brush.
Responsibility details are not available.
Dark Earth formed, together with Dark Green, the pair that from the late 1930s covered the upper surfaces of Royal Air Force machines. On the Hurricanes of the Battle of Britain, on early Spitfires, on Blenheims and on the heavy Wellingtons the two fields alternated in softly waving patches, and the scheme was mirrored on even and odd production numbers. The shade has a sandy brown base with no red cast and on a finished model looks lighter than the earth colors of ground vehicles, with which it is often confused.
This range is not water-thinnable; the binder is a lacquer on a cellulose base. Only the brand's own lacquer thinner belongs with it, and that thinner also governs the speed of drying: the slower the variant, the smoother the film. The paint dries quickly, holds firmly even on smooth plastic without a base, and once hardened it takes masking tape without the edges tearing.
Into the gun it goes thinned to roughly the consistency of milk, in thin coats with a short pause between them. The solvent fumes are penetrating, so work in a ventilated room or at an extraction booth and close the container after use, otherwise the contents will thicken. With a brush, lay the shade down quickly and do not go back into a stroke that has started to set, otherwise the layer underneath will begin to dissolve and drag into a smear. For the large areas of the fuselage and wings a gun is therefore always the better choice, and the brush is best left for touching up around projections, for finishing propeller blades and for places the airflow cannot reach.
