Oxford Blue - a dark blue for uniform areas

Oxford Blue is a bottled acrylic from the dense Artistic Dense range. It is thinned with water or with acrylic thinner and it is intended mainly for painting figures with a brush. The name of the shade also appears with the lacquers and paints of other manufacturers, which have different chemistry; this item is an acrylic paint in a bottle and it behaves accordingly. The shade is a dark, rich blue coming close to a navy tone — darker than a medium blue, but not as darkened as the deepest shadow shades.

Where the shade belongs

A dark blue is the color of uniform coats, caps, trousers and working clothes, but also of naval and club cloth, dark wool cloth and accessories. On a figure it works well as the midtone, to which you build the shadow with a darker blue and the highlights, by contrast, by mixing in gray or a light blue. Over a dark surface the shade holds well, over a light one it looks richer — both are usable, only check your choice of base on a test piece and not straight on a finished figure.

How to work with it

• The bottle is the main working container, not a palette: transfer the dense acrylic drop by drop, so that what is left in the bottle does not dry out and thicken.
• After work wipe the rim of the neck and tighten the cap — a dried remnant on the thread is the most frequent reason a paint thickens in the bottle.
• Mix it with white or light gray for highlights; for a cooler shift a drop of Prussian blue is enough.
• Always mix the paint before taking it up, as with dark blues uneven density is the most visible.
