About product

Agama Patinator Wash WV 04 dark gray, water based - 30 ml

A wash (a shading solution) in a dark gray shade from the Czech maker Agama. The word water based in the name means that it is a water based product: it is thinned with water and wiped off with water too, not with mineral spirits as with synthetic (solvent) washes. It comes in a bottle of 30 ml. A wash differs from a filter in its role: a filter shifts the tone of a whole area, a wash brings out detail, running into recesses and creating a shadow in them. It is not a kit but a modeling chemical product.

Use

  • Bringing out panel lines, seams, rivets and corners: the wash is let run by capillary action into engraved lines, where a dark shadow stays once it has dried.
  • Shadows and depth: lay it on the area and, once it has flashed off, wipe it from the raised spots with a cloth dampened with water; the color stays in the lowered spots.
  • A suggestion of wear: irregular application of a thinned wash over an area.
  • A dark gray is more versatile than black: on gray and lighter camouflage it reads more realistically, because a black shadow tends to be too hard. It suits aircraft, modern vehicles and ships.
  • The base is crucial: a water based wash must not go onto uncured acrylic, as it would dissolve it and the paint would be pulled off during wiping. Let the base cure properly and go over it with a gloss clear coat, over which the wash slides nicely and can be wiped off cleanly.
  • The manufacturer recommends sealing the finished weathering with a clear coat (flat or semi-flat, depending on the look you want).

Who it is for

For modelers who want to get depth into a model without solvents; it suits work indoors as well, because you work with water and the product does not smell the way solvent washes do. It is forgiving to work with: as long as it has not dried, it can be taken off with water and started again.

A water based product. Work in a ventilated space and protect your airways if you do spray it. Keep out of the reach of children.

FAQ

That it is a water based wash. It is thinned with water and the excess is wiped off with a cloth dampened with water, not with mineral spirits as with synthetic, solvent washes.

Only onto perfectly cured acrylic, and even then it is safer to go over the base with a gloss clear coat first. A water-thinnable wash would dissolve fresh acrylic and you would pull the paint off while wiping.

A wash brings out detail: it runs into recesses, seams and engraved lines and makes a shadow in them. A filter, by contrast, shifts the tone of a whole area gently without emphasizing individual details.

A black wash tends to be too contrasty on gray and lighter surfaces and reads as drawn on. A dark gray gives a finer, more believable shadow, which is why it suits aircraft, modern vehicles and ships.
