About product

Revell Standard brush, size 5

A round modeling brush from Revell, from its standard line of brushes. It is neither a kit nor an accessory for a model: it is a working tool with which you apply paint. The Standard line comes in eight sizes, and the size 5 stands on the larger side of that scale. That is what sets it apart from the finest numbers: it does not serve for drawing hairline detail but for getting the paint onto an area quickly and evenly, with no hatching and no visible strokes.

Use

  • Base coats and even coats on smaller parts: chassis, wheels, tanks, crates, interior parts.
  • Covering areas where a fine brush would leave streaks because it holds little paint.
  • Applying varnish or a base coat to smaller assemblies before detail painting.
  • Quickly covering larger areas of a figure (a cloak, a base) before moving on to detail.

Why round rather than flat

Even though this brush is larger, it remains round: the bundle of bristles comes together into a point, so besides an area it will also manage an edge and the transition to detail. A flat brush, by contrast, has a straight edge and is built for flat areas and sharp divisions. The size 5 is therefore a sensible compromise when you do not want to swap between two brushes on a single part.

Care of the brush

  • Clean it right after use, not once the paint has dried: acrylic paints with water or an acrylic thinner, enamels with mineral spirits.
  • Never stand a brush point down in thinner: the bristles bend and the point is gone for good.
  • Do not press on the bristles; the point spreads the paint, not force.
  • Dry it flat or point up, so that thinner does not run into the ferrule.

Who it is for

For modelers who paint a whole model with a brush or touch up after airbrushing. It is a universal workhorse for the set: for fine lines, add one of the thin numbers to it.

Paints, thinners and glue are not included in the package. Thinners and mineral spirits are flammable, so work in a ventilated room, out of the reach of children and away from open flame.

FAQ

The size 5 is intended for more continuous coats and base coats on smaller parts; it covers an area quickly and without streaks. As soon as you move to the eyes of figures, instruments or hairline detail it is too large and you need one of the finest numbers in the line.

A round bundle comes together into a point, keeps it and so aims at detail and edges. A flat brush has a straight edge and is built for flat areas and sharp divisions. This brush is round.

Always right after use: acrylic paints with water or an acrylic thinner, enamels with mineral spirits. Never store a brush point down in thinner, and dry it flat or point up.

No. This is the brush alone. Paints, thinners and glue are not included.
