Wild Dark Moss

A dark moss for damp corners

Moss grows where the sun does not reach, and it is precisely such corners that make terrain believable. Vallejo supplies this shade as ready-made tufts stuck to a carrier film: you peel them off with tweezers and press them onto a finished surface. The color is deep, a dark green with a hint of black, the tone you meet on the north side of stone walls, at the foot of old trunks, among roots in undergrowth or on boulders by water.

Two millimeters, the lowest profile in the range

The growth measures 2 mm. Of all the heights in which this scenic range appears, this is the smallest, and that is its main advantage. The moss does not overgrow grass, so it serves as an underlayer: patches of moss first, taller tufts over them and individual blades right at the end. The terrain gains a depth that cannot be achieved with an even scatter.

Working with the sheet and fine-tuning the shade

The film carries 35 pieces. The adhesive on the underside holds by itself, but for scenes that are handled often we recommend running a drop of thinned PVA under each piece and fixing the area with matte varnish once dry. The shade can be shifted with a dry brush or by stippling pigment, so that two neighboring patches do not look like an impression of the same sample. And the moss does not have to be glued only to the ground: smaller pieces will sit on roof tiles, on the edges of steps, in the joints of paving and on the trunk of a tree you want to add a few decades to. In larger scales it also works as a suggestion of algae on wooden piles or on the bottom of a hull hauled out onto a bank. Anyone modeling the interiors of ruins will appreciate the option of working moss into the corners of rooms under a cracked roof, where rain seeps into the masonry.
