White for the Aerial scheme

On Gundam machines the white areas make up most of the surface, and it is on them that every inaccuracy shows. This shade is mixed for the scheme of the Aerial machine, so there is no need to hit it by mixing your own and no question of how to carry on if the white runs out in the middle of the build. Away from Gundam kits it serves just as well anywhere a clean white is wanted.

How to apply the white

The paint is a water-thinnable acrylic and it is ready to work with straight from the bottle; stir it thoroughly before use, though, because the pigment sinks to the bottom while it stands. White is the most demanding of all shades when it comes to covering, so expect several coats. Each of them must be thin: a heavy application floods the engraved seams and edges, which then cannot be emphasized. For an airbrush, thin the paint with the thinner of the same line according to the manufacturer's instructions, as a thinner for another type of paint may curdle the coat. With a brush, draw in one direction and do not go back into an area that has started to set.

What to watch out for

• A light base cuts the number of coats down, while over dark plastic white stays translucent for a long time
• The surface must be washed and degreased before painting, as grease shows on white
• Paint in a clean space, because white catches every speck of dust
• Paint all the white parts in one session so that they share the same tone
• Clean the brushes and the gun at once, while the paint is still fresh
