The Spanish Air Force received twenty F-104G machines in the mid-1960s and operated them for only seven years. Even so, they left behind a reputation that no other user of the type has: over the whole of their service not a single aircraft was lost, although elsewhere the Starfighter counted as a machine demanding to fly. The Spanish examples flew without camouflage, in bare metal with the colored insignia of their squadrons.
The Greek Air Force, by contrast, kept its Starfighters in service for over three decades. Further machines taken over from NATO allies were added to its own, and in later years the glossy metal gave way to a dark camouflage. Greek Starfighters thus offer both appearances of the type, which one model can hardly manage at once.
There are six shades in the package: two green tones, one of which corresponds to the shade RAL 6011 and the other to the designation RLM 81, then a sand tone to the standard FS 30219, a stone gray, a second gray designated FS 36622 and a satin white. The range therefore covers the upper camouflage surfaces as well as the light lower areas.
The paints are acrylic and they are thinned with water or with the thinner of the same line. Camouflage blends are best sprayed with thinned paint at low pressure and with the nozzle close to the surface, whereas large uniform areas need several thin passes rather than one heavy application. Between the individual tones it is sensible to let the coat cure properly, otherwise the masking tape will bite into the soft layer when it is peeled off. The package contains paints only, and neither a model nor a decal sheet is in it.
