Fantasy and sci-fi subjects have one advantage over historical modeling: nobody can take you to task for a shade not matching the real thing. At the same time, though, you have nothing to lean on, and so what decides is whether the colors hold together on one model. A set put together for this range of subjects gives a starting palette that you can build on and mix further, without collecting individual bottles from across a whole range.
Mix the paint thoroughly before every use; the pigment settles to the bottom, and unmixed paint has a different tone and a different covering power. Use the thinner the manufacturer specifies for this range and keep to the thinning ratio given in the instructions on the packaging. Lay on several thin coats rather than one thick one: a thick coat fills fine relief and slides off an edge. Always try a new shade on a sample, best on a piece of waste plastic treated the same way as the model.
Shades from one range go together more reliably than paints from different brands, where both the sheen and the drying can diverge. Mix within the set, then, and prepare more of a mixed tone than you need. Close the bottles carefully after work and wipe the rim of the neck, so that dried paint does not make the next opening impossible. Store them upright and away from frost and direct sun.
