The finest grain of the range in a brown shade, a package of 353 cm³. A filling between stones as well as the surface of roads and shoulders.
Responsibility details are not available.
Coarse stones set the silhouette of a slope, but it is the smallest grain that gives it credibility. It is poured in between the larger pieces, fills the shadows beneath them and removes the impression that the fragments are merely lying stuck to a smooth base. The same grit serves where there is no rock at all: on a field road, on a shoulder, on a trodden strip along the track or on the bank of a stream where water has left a deposit.
The brown tone matches rocks permeated with iron oxides and earth, that is what we see in nature on old, long-settled slopes. Compared with gray granite it comes across as warmer and joins up better with earthy terrain, so the transition between stone and soil does not need as much additional toning.
A practical piece of advice in closing: apply a thin layer first and let it dry, and only then add more. One thick dose of glue lifts the grit and it cracks as it dries, whereas two thin ones hold firmly and preserve the texture. Once the layer has hardened, go over it lightly with a dark glaze so that the recesses are drawn out, and finally emphasize the ridges of the largest grains with a dry brush. The difference between a layer that was poured all at once and a layer built up bit by bit is visible on a finished diorama even from a meter away.
